Church arrangements in light of new guidelines from Catholic Bishops

– updated  Wed 18th March

The Bishops of England and Wales have announced there will be no public liturgies from Friday evening (ie 20th March).

That means no public Masses at all. Mass will be celebrated, but behind closed doors. We are working as hard as we can to get the Mass livestreamed via a YouTube channel, and will post arrangements as soon as they are complete. Keep checking back here.

In the meantime, streaming of services is always available at the Cathedral in Portsmouth:

https://www.portsmouthcatholiccathedral.org.uk/live-mass.php

St Peter’s church will be open till 10pm this Friday evening, 20th March.

After that, this is the schedule (simpler than it looks at first glance!) from Friday until Sunday 29th March, 5th Sunday of Lent

Every day Fr Mark will say Morning Prayer at 6.30 am. There will be Mass each evening at 7pm, and Night Prayer at 9pm.

ALL THE ABOVE ARE EVERY DAY, AND THE CHURCH WILL BE CLOSED DURING THE SERVICES.

In addition there will be 10 am Mass at St Peter’s on SUNDAYS, church closed.

The rest of the time, BETWEEN 7AM AND 7PM the church will be OPEN for people to walk in and say prayers, apart from Sundays, when the church will open at midday.

The clocks change at the weekend of the 29th, so we may change the arrangements then.

For the moment the other churches in the Parish will be closed, but that may change.

If you do come to church, please follow the guidelines – try to limit as far as possible the touching of surfaces, etc with your hands, use hand sanitizers provided, try to keep space from fellow attenders.

If you NEED HELP, contact us via this website, phone 01962 852804, office email office@stpeterswinchester.org.uk or Facebook. We will do what we can.

If you can OFFER HELP do so informally to friends, family and neighbours. If you are DBS-checked and can offer more, please contact office.

We have set up a Prayerline, giving you the opportunity to request and offer prayers for all – email us at prayers@stpeterswinchester.org.uk

And you can pray anyway. That is what we will be doing, alongside the practical steps we’re taking.

The Bishops have provided  a set of prayers for use by those who cannot get to Mass – you can find them here.

There is a statement from Bishop Philip about these new measures – it contains a lot of detail about the closures, and you can read it here.

Thanks to everyone who came to the Mass and Parish Meeting on the Feast of the Winchester Martyrs

Fr Mark spoke about his new Vision for our Parish, and talked about the Parish Plan.

Fr Mark writes:

It’s incredible to think that I’ve now been with you in this parish for two years now and I’m loving it. I’ve been blessed and humbled and nourished in so many different ways by so many different people. Thank you.

As I look ahead over these next few years, the mission is to help us develop as a parish community. To do this, I would like to propose a common mission for us all, together: Bringing people closer to Jesus Christ in hope and joy.

Another way of looking at the mission is to find new ways to release the incredible potential that the people of St Peter’s and the Winchester Martyrs have been given…

Alpha in Winchester

Is there more to life than this?

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone’s welcome. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation.

We run the Alpha programme regularly at St Peter’s and the Winchester Martyrs, and we’d be delighted to welcome you. Please look at the Alpha page here, and contact us for more details.
